Airport Surface Operation Collaborative Automation Concept

چکیده
Limitation in airport runway throughput naturally constrains traffic capacity. For this reason, the increasing demand on capacity ultimately will require airport expansion to increase the number of runways and associated taxiways. Often the airport expansion plans necessitate an increase in the complexity of surface traffic, leading to a decrease in surface traffic efficiency, which is reflected as an increase in taxi delays. Consequently any concept to increase airport traffic capacity needs to take into account efficiency issues such as taxi delays as well as safety and operator workload issues. This paper introduces a collaborative automation concept being developed under the Surface Operation Automation Research (SOAR) to address some of these issues in a complex airport environment. The concept is enabled by advanced technologies envisioned for the 2020 time frame. It involves surface traffic management (STM) automation to aid tower operation, and flight-deck automation to help execute clearances generated by the STM automation for efficient surface operation. The functions of and integrated operation between these automation components are described, together with an assessment of enabling technologies in communication, navigation, and surveillance. Plans for evaluating the collaborative concept prior to full-scale technology development are

Automation Tools for Enhancing Ground-operation Situation Awareness and Flow Efficiency
In view of the ever-increasing air traffic, much attention in air-traffic-management research has been given to improving arrival and departure efficiency. As air traffic begins and ends at the airport, the issues of taxi delays and ground-operation incursions become more pressing. This paper considers the surface-traffic problem at major airports and envisions a collaborative traffic and aircr...
متن کاملOptimal Airport Surface Traffic Planning Using Mixed-Integer Linear Programming
We describe an ongoing research effort pertaining to the development of a surface traffic automation system that will help controllers to better coordinate surface traffic movements related to arrival and departure traffic. More specifically, we describe the concept for a taxi-planning support tool that aims to optimize the routing and scheduling of airport surface traffic in such a way as to d...
متن کاملCollaborative Departure Queue Management An Example of Airport Collaborative Decision Making in the United States
The management of airport surface operations to provide shared situational awareness and to control taxi times through the use of ‘virtual queues’ has become an important component of Air Traffic Management (ATM) research and development in both Europe and the United States. Airport Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) has been implemented at a number of airports in Europe, and multiple departur...
متن کاملEffects of Modes of Cockpit Automation on Pilot Performance and Workload in a Next Generation Flight Concept of Operation
The objective of this study was to compare the effects of various forms of advanced cockpit automation for flight planning on pilot performance and workload under a futuristic concept of operation. A lab experiment was conducted in which airline pilots flew simulated tailored arrivals to an airport using three modes of automation (MOAs), including a control-display unit (CDU) to the aircraft fl...

• Because of a steady increase in air traffic, the Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has instituted a number of programs that are designed to improve safety, reduce delays, and lessen workload intensity for air traffic controllers. The Airport Surface Traffic Automation (ASTA) program, which represents only a small portion of the total FAA effort, uses new tec...
